Commission Gallery

Custom paintings are always fun and often challenging. I like them because they stretch my boundaries and my painting experience, and I know in the process I'm really delivering something special for my clients.
Commissioned paintings offer a unique opportunity to participate in the exact painting you want. The size, color subject and style can all be determined before the painting is made. I’ve painted 100+ commission paintings. Below are but a few samples.

My commissioned paintings have ranged from a tiny 8 x 10” watercolor to a whopping 8’ x 12’ acrylic on canvas diptych. I am happy to give you my best quote on your ideal painting. To learn how easy it is, visit the Services menu above or click this link:  Commission Paintings

Retirement or perhaps work sometimes causes even the most loyal "west coaster" to reluctantly leave the comfort and beauty of a BC coastal community. This interpretive painting was part of two pieces I made for a nice couple who were relocating to the Okanagan. With muted earth tones, numerous logs along the shoreline and deep blue water, it refects so many places unique to BC.

In spit of her menacing appearance, this British Bulldog had a gentle and loving personality. The owners loved how her ears would perk up especially when she got hugged. So that was the goal. The challenge was Chloe didn’t like my camera so down went her ears every time I tried to shoot! Using a composite of several photos I was able to create the final portrait.

Arbutus and Poppies acrylic painting on canvas by Barry Tate

Arbutus and Poppies
36 x 48” acrylic on canvas, $ sold
(prints available)

This was a nice commission to do because my clients had this great view and some super ideas of their own. They live in the Metchosin area of Victoria on a mountain. Their view is spectacular but often the distant Olympic Mountains can get it obscured by fog and mist. We designed this painting to fit over at particular space in the living room. A special element to the painting that is not so obvious, is it’s a very wide 210 degree panoramic view (long and skinny) compressed into a more artistic and manageable shape! The most important elements of their view were all kept and recognizable including the arbutus and the tree with the eagle.

Tranquility (installed on a yacht)
36 x 50” acrylic on canvas, $ sold
(no prints)

Another fun commission for some really nice clients. Their beautiful yacht had a large uninspired pale blank wall behind the seating area in the bridge. They particularly enjoy all the wonderful scenery while cruising through the gulf islands so together we created Tranquility. The painting was designed to bring more color and life into the room and to fill the empty void. Existing colors in their decor were incorporated into the piece so it looks and feels at home and we left just enough space around the edges to "frame" it.

Jazz
18 x 22” acrylic on canvas, $ sold

What a great name for a dog.Painting a Schnauzer is particularly challenging. There is continuous color shifting in his coat from multi shades of grey moving to golden tan and deep sienna. But most tricky to render with paint is the fur is metallic and really silver looking. That's what I like about most of my commission paintings, it pushes and makes you grow your skills.
A painting of the Saanich peninsula by Barry Tate

A Great View
30 x 40” acrylic on canvas, $ sold
(no prints)

This was a view from my clients home on the Saanich Peninsula. It is looking west across the the Valley near Stelly's Cross Roads. Knowing that a move was in their plans, they wanted to take this spectacular view with them. We chose to paint it in a realistic style for the memories it has. It was a nice painting to do but the single most challenging part was the shiny glass table between the chairs! It was like trying to accurately paint a random puddle of partially mixed colors.
Hakai Pass painting with natural boardwalk.

Hakai Pass
30 x 40” acrylic on canvas, $ sold
(prints available)

Hakai Pass is one of the most beautiful places on the west coast of Canada. The pristine waters and abundant fishing make this an extraordinary destination for a group to enjoy. The accurately painted hand rail was a real challenge to paint. It is all driftwood and fitted into place as it will because there's no consistant shape or size. This painting was given as a retirement gift to a well loved boss in the movie industry.
A realistic painting of Cadboro Bau beach on Vancouver Island BC by artist Barry Tate

Cadboro Bay
30 x 40” acrylic on canvas, $ sold
(prints available)

Cadboro Bay Beach is a hidden jewell that even most locals don't know about. It gets a good amount of sun so the water can be "almost warm" if you're inclined. This commissioned painting was a mother's wedding gift to her daughter and new son in law. They had gotten engaged on this beach a year earlier.
